The thorny issue of comps, freebies, etc. and the Music Journalist

While I'm shooting shows I always encounter at least one person who assumes I got into the show for free because I'm wearing my press badge and have a camera. Sometimes there's a sincere amount of irritation in the suggestion - like an accusation, which I can relate to. While I try not be, I'm occasionally in the way, obstructing a view, or taking up a spot someone else wants. It would be one thing if I were just another patron - but the badge suggests I'm not.

After a few beers, the badge (and then the patron) suggests I'm a douche bag. Or some other colorful expletive. This is the other reason photographers have a general 3 song guideline. You have about 10 minutes to take your shots and then get out of the way. Whether you paid or not, it's the perception that you didn't that can get you into trouble. Plus, the band gets tired of having you right under their noses after awhile and they'd rather not think about you anymore.

But on to the issue at hand - comped (or free) tickets, free CD's etc.

Here's my stance - and it is only my stance. Not a judgment call on anyone else, period. But I've been asked to clarify my point, so here it is. I don't ask for comps and I don't ask for CD's to review.

Since I review local bands (primarily) and my list of recommended bands to check out is lengthy, I will never run out local talent to check out. These bands aren't charging $30 a show folks! Most of the shows are under $10. Same goes for their CD's (many of which are available digitally for an even lower price - so if you want me to hear your music to review, why press me a CD at all?)

My point is I pay to get in. Frequently (okay more than frequently, pretty much every time) I also buy the CD. That's because I screen the music and the bands before I decide to go to the show. Myspace can be a beautiful thing. Friends are also wonderful sources of information and leads. Does that mean if someone sends me a free CD I won't listen to it? No, but I discourage it. I'm behind as it is folks - and you should see this list I'm working on. Does it mean I'll turn down free tickets to a show, again - not necessarily, but this is my second job - and as you can imagine, it generates more bills than it pays. (Camera lenses don't pay for themselves, honey.) My time is far more limited than I would like it to be. I'd love to cover 2 shows a weekend, but my day job would suffer and my knees would never forgive me.

I have accepted the occasional comped ticket to shoot a show (I was actually shooting a series of shows of one particular band) and the manager put my husband and I on the list so we could both shoot (we're both photographers) that particular show. I didn't know that she meant that our tickets were paid for - I thought that we were only guaranteed a place to shoot from. Of course the band's manager was no fool. I purchased three CD's that night. And two more CD's on successive shows that I paid to get into. Have I mentioned I love live music? Whenever I get an email from someone that says "I saw so-an-so that you recommended, and I just loved the show!" - I just know I'm doing God's work. Well, I'm doing somebody's work anyway - and it feels pretty damn good. So there.

But it begs the question. Am I more likely to write a favorable piece for a band who "pays my way?" Readers certainly suggest it. The pressure has been there on occasion, but very, very rarely. It's simply the way the business is run to get exposure for your band. I've had promoters tell me that they feel if they don't comp the press they risk getting bad write-ups - or worse, no coverage at all.

It doesn't offer black and white rules because there aren't any to offer. Every journalist makes their own choices based on their style, schedule, writing needs, and available work and talent. I think I could blather on another hour and still not convey this very well, so I think I'm just going to get back to work on my articles and put this post to bed.

I really need to thank Carolyn Wonderland in person someday for her "Miss Understood" CD and for her rendition of Terri Hendrix' I Found the Lions in particular, if I ever get the chance. I feel like Dr. Seuss's Grinch, my heart seems to grow 3 sizes every time I play the song (and I play the song a lot.)

I come from a family with lots of Leo women (myself included.) Strong willed, opinionated, uppity broads who stand up for each other and what's right. My grandmother and mom in particular have always been strong examples of resilient, lion-hearted women who can see anything through to the end and face any problem head on.

They also tend to have very wicked senses of humor. If you meet my mom and she happens to have a bruise or a scrape somewhere (she has a formerly-feral cat - so this is a somewhat likely occurrence) and you ask her about it, she always responds, "I got it in a bar fight," with a nearly innocent smile. Of course, she did shoot pool on the local league so one was never entirely sure she was always joking.

But as I spent more and more of my life away from them, away from their influence, I stopped being a lion. It was such a slow drift, I didn't notice it for a long time. Before long, all my energy was being spent jumping at shadows. Illness, stress, finances - everything we all go through takes its toll. But how we respond to it makes all the difference.

Talking to my mom one evening, we were discussing pain management, which we both struggle with. And we agreed that it's not the pain that will ultimately drive you to despair. It's the fear of the pain. The fear of the pain colors every decision - should I stay home? What if I fall? Should I call in? Should I just stay in bed? Should I just. stop. breathing.

Suddenly I was no longer a lion. I was a mouse.

I played dead

But my pulse was too loud
The hyenas giggled as the lions formed a crowd
I played dead

The buzzards in the tree

Waited for the lions to make a meal out of me

I was holding my breath, but what was I waiting for? No one's coming to save me. This isn't a dress rehearsal for something better. This is it, chica. I was relying on various experts, which to some extent you should, of course - that's what they're there for. But, doctors, accountants, financial advisers - they're all telling you the same thing - some stuff is seriously wrong. Here are some ideas, but you've to be the one to sort it out. There's only so far into the jungle they can take you, then you've got to go the rest of the way on your own.

So now it's time to stop listening to the wrong people and start surrounding myself with the right people. The people who've always been the right influence. This summer I'm visiting the pride, going home to the lion's den - back to Nebraska, to my family. I need stand barefoot in the dirt and get my bearings. Listen to some Phoebe Snow with my mom and then introduce her to Wonderland, and Ruthie Foster, Guy Forsyth and Band of Heathens while I'm at it. Music is the language of healing for us - the only drug that helps every time.

It's time to be a lion again.

An amazing thing happens when you make the simple decision to be a lion again. You breathe a little deeper. You hold your head a little higher. Start to feel a little more swing in that back porch. It changes how everyone else sees you too.

Hendrix's song isn't about being the lion, of course, it's about escaping lions - but mastering the jungle is what it's really all about. So step on out of the den into your domain, take a deep breath, and start taking back your jungle.

Naughty Author's Voice! No biscuit!

There's a lot written advice-wise about finding your authentic voice as a writer. I believe in that. I also believe I have a strong, consistent, authentic voice. The problem is that voice seems to have a swearing problem.

So I have tried to, in the interest of SEO ranking and tender ears, tone it down and keep a nice PG rating. However, now that I have found a field that I'm so truly passionate about, it gets a little more difficult to keep from letting the occasional expletive slip out. Well, possibly more than occasional expletive.

I've tried giving up swearing several times. Quarters in jars, rubber bands on wrists - you name it. The problem is that I was raised by an engineer. I'm married to an engineer and his friends are all engineers. For those of you who have not been graced by loads of computer engineers in your life, it's like living on a pirate ship. Swearing is an art form. Add to that the fact that my best friend lived in Scotland, and well... Let's just say this is probably the longest couple of paragraphs I've written without feeling a dire need to sneak in a four letter word.

I also considered substituting another harmless word for the swear word (of course you have to misspell it so the search engine bots don't think you're writing an article about something else.) So I thought of using the word "monkie." But here is a sample of how it would sound:

"Wow! Band X is monkie amazing. Holy monkie-monkie, I'm going to need every monkie CD they've ever put out."

Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea, I do have a substantial vocabulary. I promise I do. Real people have actually heard me use words like stentorian, rubato, and involutions correctly - I even use the word "myriad" properly in conversation and writing. (Okay, that's probably because the movie "Heathers" imprinted it upon me.) Swearing simply adds a certain color and well, texture, where multi syllabic high-scrabble-scoring words just won't do. I particularly admire the versatility of the f-bomb. And what English major wouldn't? It can be nearly every part of speech in a sentence? It's a beautiful thing, really.

Guy Forsyth Reviews are Up - Backstory

There was some delay on getting those up, primarily due to finding a page number for a quote reference for AC (for a book I had loaned out some time ago and had never gotten back.) I can't believe it took almost a week to find a page number - but I couldn't leave the quote out. And so it went... We, I could have left it out, but it wouldn't have been the same. Anyway, I'm stubborn that way. Even the local (UT and city) libraries were no help - but Amazon was - thank you searchable online books!

So here's a little background that you won't find in the articles.

1.) I took the swearing out of the articles. Dennis (correctly) stated that swearing does not add to the SEO ranking of the articles. However, the exact quote of people in the audience really was, "Oh my God, why isn't this guy f***ing famous, he is f***ing brilliant!" I was just trying to be accurate. (Insert smirk here.)

2.) I did in the course of watching the show, decide to switch beats. A couple of people have asked me to elaborate on that and it is actually more than just deciding to watch more live music (which I think everyone should do.) Supporting local artists (visual artists as well as musicians) is something I feel strongly about and journalists are in a unique position to be able to advocate for artists. I grew up with artists and it was that upbringing that put me on this path.

Stevie putting me on the Beautiful Losers screening (SXSW 2008) started the ball rolling. Sitting in Cactus Cafe for the Guy Forsyth show just sealed the deal.

4.) Meeting Guy Forsyth leaves an impression. He is one of the few people I have ever met that is all there. It's not just that when he shakes your hand he actually looks you in the eye and pays attention (though in my dad's eyes that's enough to judge a man for the rest of his days, the pressure!) - he really is in the moment. He's that way on stage, too. It makes a difference.

5.) Forsyth makes me think of Three Dog Night's song (Road to) Shambala. I dont' know why. Weird.

My grandmother found my letter to then President Reagan in 1982. What can I say? I was 10 years old and he liked jelly beans. She's still trying to track down the response from the White House that came a couple of weeks later lol.

As far as former President Carter's actions of late, all I can say is I'm not surprised. I don't agree that he should meet with the Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal, not only because the move will be seen as "illegal" but because he will likely be used and in a great deal of danger personally (not that that has ever stopped him before.)

This cause has always been his calling and I can't imagine anyone talking him out of it. He brokered the first treaty with Isreal and an Arab country (Egypt) in 1979, and I think he's had that passion for the region ever since. Of course Isreal has given him the cold shoulder and told him he is on his own. We'll see what comes of his actions.

Growing Pains and Updates

Eventually all of my portfolios, editorial work, CV and everything else that seems relevant will either be archived on this site, or linked directly from it. In the meantime it's going to be a bit messy. Not only will I be trying to keep up with linking new things that get published, but archiving and linking all of the old stuff as well, so that I have one, cohesive (well, mostly cohesive) catalog of my published work.

On one hand, it's really great that I have so much stuff to link up. On the other hand this is a much bigger undertaking than I thought it would be. Yeeesh! I just found 2 backup CD's that had articles published from 1998 that I'd thought I'd lost and about 200 portfolio pictures from various product and runway shoots. Wow...

So while I'm working on all of that, I also:

- Just submitted my review of Beautiful Losers from the SXSW Film Festival.
- Went to my first Blanton Museum B-Scene party - which was a lot of fun for my friend Kathryn and me.
- Participated in and covered my very first Texas Caucus!
- Got to see Bill Clinton speak at UT, read about that here.
- Went to a book signing and got to meet Jordan Rubin, which I will also be writing up soon.

It appears that my dog and the owl that lives in our backyard giant Locust Bean Tree have formed a sort of friendship.

My dog will sit at the door, softly arffing and woofing (with the occasional deep sigh) while the owl hoots and hooo's back.

The cat, in his tall, carpeted tree, and I simply watch and listen, and occasionally give each other the equivalent of a shrug, while we ponder what they must be talking about.

"Lovely weather we're having tonight, isn't it?" (hoothooOOoo?)

"Yes, quite. Not so chilly as last night." (arffarrfwooof)

"Did you see that rather plump squirrel earlier?" (hoothooOOhoot?)

"I did indeed - quite quick for such a plump fellow." (arffhurumph arff)

"I let him get away of course, it being the holiday season you know." (HoothootHOOooo)

"Of course, of course. I thought you did." (arf*sigh*hurumph)

"He looked to be quite the tasty morsel though, didn't he?" (hootHooOOohooot?)

Now that I've read all the other books in the series, lovely Mike bought me the latest, "Cerulean Sins" as a Christmas present. I wanted to wait to finish other books before I started this one - but of course I have no will power, and I read it immediately.

If, dear readers, you've read the books leading up to this one, you know that our heroine, Anita Blake, has gone from being celibate to boinking nearly everyone in the books. This story is no exception. I won't divulge who - but I doubt you'd be surprised. Aside from the drastic morality shift, the only two annoyances to the plot are the main character's continuing badly timed guilt, and the increasing predictability of the crimes she investigates. The bad guys get increasingly bad - but she has increasing power to deal with them. Here's the basic equation:

Step One: Bad guys arrive in town and challenge one or all of the triumvirate (Richard/Jean-Claude/Anita). (Usually there is also some really horrendous crime committed - but not always related to the Bad (Supernatural) Guy.)

Step Two: An action, usually unethical/immoral/repugnant is the key to increasing power and thus defeating Bad Guy.

Step Three: Agonize over the decision.

Step Four: Do it anyway.

Step Five: Feel guilty.

Step Six: Beat the Bad Guy, but not before being introduced (somewhere in the plot) to a new imminent Badder Guy, that will probably arrive in the next novel.

Step Seven: Feel a bit more guilty. Think about Richard. Sum up.

I can't complain too much because having a successful formula will keep your fans happy and you employed. I just miss the mysteries being a bit more complicated. Though portions of the book are quite good - the main plot was just to obvious. The character, Anita Blake, seems to have only one weakness now, her own battle with her morality, which seems to get a bit more trite in every succeeding book.

The secondary characters hold much of the interest now, particularly Asher, the old lover of Jean Claude. In fact, in several instances it is those characters that propel the story forward, especially Jason in this instance. Jason finally calls Anita on her feelings of guilt and angst - and draws attention to her defense mechanisms that are making her life harder and more complicated than it needs to be. I wouldn't have thought of his character as being the analytical type, but if follows the plot well.

That's it for now. Not exactly a thumbs up - but not a thumbs down either. I still buy the next book, of course, because I'm addicted and hopeful that I'll be surprised. We'll see. . .

Book Review: Cicero's Old Age and Friendship - Part II

"A sure friend is discerned in unsure matters." --- Ennius

Although it seemed, at first glance, that this essay would be a more simple and even superficial treatment of the subject, it turned out to be the more complex. It assumes more knowledge of the Stoic position on the nature of human beings and looks more explicitly at what is and what may not be friendship.

The first and primary assumption is that friendship can only exist among the good. For those who are wicked will seek the advantage from every association and that cannot be truly termed friendship. Friendship must still come second to virtue.

The second assumption is actually Cicero's definition of friendship: "Friendship is nothing else than a complete union of feeling on all subjects, divine and human, accompanied by kindly feeling and attachment."

Third, the importance of friendship to society and civility itself: "nay... should you remove from nature the cement of kind feelings, neither a house nor a city will be able to stand; even the cultivation of land will not continue."

This question of virtue in friendship has weighed on me much in the past - and I continue to observe it my current friendships. Afterall, how easy is it too lapse into our selfish wants, our own appetites when we advise or console a friend? How often do we question whether a course of action benefits the friendship itself - or merely satisfies what we personally crave. I have been guilty of satisfying my own desires before the needs of a friendship and have lost the friend consequently. It's a difficult balance to be struck, but one worth observing.

He continues with advice concerning old friends and new friends and the benefit of creating multiple associations so that none be left out. He also weighs the benefit of allowing an old friendship that has turned bitter to simply die away than to force a violent end.

This was in many ways the more practical essays for me - but considering my age, that isn't surprising. As with most things that happen into my life - I cannot help but note the timing.

Onto Cicero's Paradoxes..

I will only give this a brief explanation as I found these to be merely mental and oratory exercises, rather than the deeper, more meaningful treatises he's famous for. These paradoxes are derived from the arguments of the Stoics - and can be somewhat confusing when it is remembered that Cicero himself was not a Stoic - though he appears to support the arguments here.

Perhaps the best explanation lies in this quote:

"There is, hhowever, nothing so incredible that it may not be made more plausible by eloquence; nothing so rough and uncultivated that it may not, in oratory, become brilliant and polished."

There are the flollowing "Paradoxes" or proofs which he takes in turn:

1. That virtue is the only good
2. A man who is virtuous is destitute of no requisite of a happy life.
3. That all misdeeds are in themselves equal, and good deeds are the same.
4. That every fool is a madman (This proof is directed pointedly at Publius Clodius.)
5. That the wise man alone is free, and that every fool is a slave.
6. That the wise man alone is rich.

Though he clearly believes the value of defending these basic Stoic beliefs - the elaborate prose he uses to do so suggests more the emphasis on style, rather than substance.

Book Review: Cicero's Old Age and Friendship

I've put this off as long as is reasonable and can't avoid it any longer. An entry on any of Cicero's works is bound to be lengthy but I am hoping this will be an exception.

It is hard to imagine that as our civilization has progressed these two thousand years, that we feel less and less inclined to seriously analyse what could only be termed "ubiquitous". Old Age, friendship, virtue, duty - they are everywhere represented but are either given over to an authority (such as religion, government etc.) to define for us, or only given cursory attention in our early education.

Two thousand years ago and more, it was quite a different story. Analysis of those things most prevelant in life - nature, love, vice, death, mental states etc. - were to be studied not just for the answers that study would generate - but for the act of studying itself. As is commonly referred to in science - the subject is changed by observation - and, to a sgnificant extent - so is the observer. That was the point - to study the truth of things and be changed by them.

Cicero's essay on Old Age, written as a lecture from the censor* (see More) Cato to two friends, Scipio and Laelius, on the advantages and disadvantages of old age. Cicero was 63 years old when he wrote it and said that the "pleasure he experienced in writing it made him forget his own infirmities." The treatise itself is addressed to Titus Pomponius Atticus, a Roman knight.

Cato discusses in turn the primary myths associated with old age:
1. It calls us away from the tranasaction of affairs.
2. It renders the body more feeble.
3. Deprives us of almost all pleasure.
4. That it is not far from death.

First, he explains to the two young men, it need not call us from the transanction of affairs. It calls us from the front lines of war - to where our perspective should be even more useful. And in the matters of war and civil affairs - are not the cooler heads of those who've survived such many years more valuable?

States Cato, "but if you shall be inclined to read or hear of foreign matters, you will find the greatest commonwealths have been overthrown by young men, and supported and restored by old men."

He further demonstates his point by listing those most decorated and celebrated statesmen who made their strongest contributions to the glory of Rome in their later years.

Second, he states that the body and mind need not be rendered more feeble. He takes rather the Stoic view of virtue leading to good health overall, and to longevity in particular. In matters of the mind espeically practice and discipline of the appetites holds the key. And to the question of physical strength Cato states, "Derive nobility from yourself and not from physical prowess." Physical strength is fleeting in any context - strength of spirit can more than compensate for the body's weakness.

Third, again taking the Stoic stance, Cato reminds us that it is not necessarily that we are deprived pleasures that a youthful body provides - but of the need for it. Old age gives us the temperament to be content with what we have and the aqbility to regulate our appetites.

Finally Cato asks, what have we to fear of death? If all things of natural law are necessarily good and virtuous - than how can death be something to fear? It is as natural as every part of life. And since we've no idea how long we shall have , what is gained by worrying? If we die and there is nothing that follows - then what will we care of death after it is done with us? And if virtue is rewarded with a next life - then we not only have nothing to fear, but much to be gained. (And every reason to want to live a virtuous life.)

This has gone quite long - so the second essay and Cicero's Paradoxes will follow on the next entry.

Good Omens is mostly about the end of the world, Armageddon, Doomsday and the like. Except that it's also mostly about childhood, and quests and love, and the joys of just being a dog. (and growing houseplants successfully - brilliant bit about that.)

There have been a few hiccups up in the plan (the plan to end the world that is) however... the anti-Christ has been mislaid, for example. (Satanists, for all of their enthusiasm, can be a bit scatterbrained in this particular department.) Another tiny problem, the top angel and the top demon just don't seem to have their hearts, as it were, in the Plan anymore.

Doesn't that sound delightful? I laughed so hard that people near me thought I was convulsing. So there you go.. what else do you want? Go buy it.

Uhh.. except Mom - your copy's on it's way. This one goes really well with Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice. (And a beer... it'd go really well with beer. but not that No-Alcohol-Lager sort of stuff. It's really important that you don't have that with the book.)

Book Review: Beowulf

Beowulf

As M.P. may attest, I enjoy reading texts that are of the same nature together. This not only gives the opportunity to compare them, but it also seems to enhance the flavor of each one individually by it's contrast.

Beowulf, like Gilgamesh is an epic heroic tale, though it's subplots are more sophisticated. A warrior, through his triumphant effort over many monsters, becomes a wise and powerful king (though Gilgamesh was already King). And similarly he most also deal with the same mortality and questions of leadership that plagued Gilgamesh. The adventure that gives rise to our hero's fame, however - is distinctly more complicated.

King Hrothgar builds a grand fortress, Heorot, to glorify his people, his triumphs and of course, himself. In so doing he rouses the beast below, Grendel, by his peoples' rejoicing. Grendel devours 30 of his people the first night and the reign of terror continues for more than a decade.

Heroic Beowulf and his party travel far from his land, resplendant with armor and weapons to assist King Hrothgar. I'd not like to ruin the story, but I'll divulge just this one note - Grendel becomes the least of their worries. It is in defeating the many monsters that plague King Hrothgar's land and his own, that Beowulf achieves his greatness.

The foundation of the story begins with an illustration of the hazards of indulging one's vanity and it touches on it again in several places - though not with the heavy-handedness of Gilgamesh. The epic also has a distinctly Christian atmosphere as laments by the characters to gods and idols always proves futile. The author makes a point of saying, "The Lord they knew not." Though this theme is present, it is slight and again, not as heavy-handed as it might have been.

The two stories together give much service to each other, though my preference lies with Beowulf. Even my edition of the story lends itself to my enjoyment. The story resides in a 1936 worn copy of The Literature of England. The pages are as smooth as silk and nearly as thin as onion skin. The most important part is the editor's introduction to the text, which is filled not only with historical context, but also with a genuine love of the story which effectively passes from author to reader.

Creme blush has been building in popularity since last season - but it’s really come into it’s own this Fall. Texture is the key - and FACE has really raised the standard! Creme blushes have, in the past, been notoriously hard to blend - and have had little staying power. Not so with FACE’s entry into the market. Electrifying truly is the best way to describe the new colour collection from Borghese. Lime coloured

Clarins, ever braver in the color market, has launched a wonderful display of fall colour. These shades
seem plucked right out of nature! Look for new lip colours ranging from cranberry and wine, to neutral
nudes. Rich, royal tones are available to grace your fingertips in violets, russets and reds. The new Soft
Shimmer Eye colors take on some depth with new colors in cool plums and warm nature-inspired shades
of Fall. The look is typical of the season - deep colour rimed eyes, a fairly deep well-defined mouth,
with lots of shine. Blush plays a stronger role than it did this Spring - but it’s kept very well blended.

Chanel

Fall Temptress Collection
Chanel’s Temptress Collection is all about lustrous colour and attention to the eyes. The new Quadra
Eyeshadow in Mysteres contains Jade (soft, shimmery almost teal green), Cider (a wine-brown),
Golden, and Topaz (a coppery, golden bronze). The look brings the brightest colour (in this case, Jade)
closest to the eye, and uses contrasting colours along the crease and up, onto the brow bone. Eyes are
lined in the popular Dual Effect Eye Pencil in Jet. Chanel also recommends Sculpting Mascara in Black
for dramatic lashes. Eyebrows get a lot of attention this season, and the Sculpting Brow Pencils are
perfect for the job.

The blush is deep but not bright, with Flame Powder Blush coordinating the eye colour scheme and the
lip colour in Innocent (Lip Blush) lined with Java Precision Lip Definer. For the longest lasting wear, I
recommend lining with Java, then filling with the pencil, blotting once, then finally applying the
Innocent Lip Blush. Temptress Nail Colour brings the look together with a deep, smoky mauve colour.

Aveda Fall Colour

Sizzle. Shimmer. Smolder.

Aveda is also targeting the strong lip this fall in six blazing new lip shades: (from left to right) Passion
Flower, Wild Oats, Sweet Petunia, Hot Pepper (a bit shinier and brighter than the picture shows), Prim
Rose ( a slightly more intense version of Wild Plum), and Pretty Posey. There’s a tremendous amount
of shine and shimmer in these pigment-rich lipsticks. And, of course, they smell terrific! All Aveda
lipsticks contain breath-freshening essences of real peppermint, cinnamon, basil and anise.

Aveda has come up with three basic looks for Fall :
Strong Statement (Just the lips, Ma’am!):
All focus is on the mouth - with the chocolate-coloured Wild Oats stealing the show. All other makeup
is very light or non-existent.
Light Touch (a perfect day look)
A softly blended eye colour in Onyx, Aurora or Cobalt to emphasize the eye - applied lightly, with a
shimmery mauve colour for the lips, like Prim Rose. Balance is the key here - nothing stark or over
done.

Mellow Drama (I’m ready for my close-up!)
This one is all out sophistication. A perfect canvas is created with Base Plus Balance (tm) and Pressed
Powder Plus Antioxidants (tm). A wash of colour is applied using Aveda’s Onecolor Plus Uruku (tm)
in Roja, coordinating perfectly with Passion Flower lip colour. Apply several coats of Raven or

If you’re familiar with Black Hills Gold, you’ll recognize the make up trend this spring and summer.
Golden pinks, greens and yellows are the rage at nearly every counter. Continuing my journey through
cosmetic lines, I’d like share what’s new at Borghese, Ultima II and Christian Dior, plus a look at what’s
coming in Dior Summer Collection.

BORGHESE
Italian fashion has rarely gone in for ultra pale pastels and this season is no exception. Colors range from
bold pinks to sensuously soft caramels. Borghese has even improved the already fabulous textures of its
makeup products by adding three new product lines -
Shadow Milano Crema - Cream Eyeshadows (wand tube)
Lili - cream shimmer
Biscotti - warm tan
Dolce - warm pink
Stone - warm medium brown
Truffle - deep brown

B Lips - B - Matte, B - Moisture
Personal note: It was tough for me to plunk down $22.50 for a lipstick, but these are truly the most
beautiful textures I’ve worn. These rival Diorific in wear and trueness - however, Borghese has the
advantage on silkiness. B-Moisture lip colors, in particular, are among the best covering and smooth
wearing I’ve come across. Personal favorite: Stiletto - a chameleon color that changes completely,
depending on the liner you use. B-Matte has the usual dryness problem with matte lipsticks, but they
wear extremely well.

Sepia (reddish medium brown), Joe (dark red brown), Morocco (neutral medium brown), Tropico (clear
pink), Spirito (rusty -brick), Carnivale (vibrant coral), Vino Vino (deep plum), Blush (soft cool pink),
Ciao (warm pink).

Tans: Copper Lucent (coppery tan), , Nudo (warm mauvey brown), Angelico (warm pink tan), Pesca
(warm peach).

Pinks and Plums - Couture Pink (clear, neutral pink), Pinkissima (warm mauve), , Paradiso (clear. cool
pink), Primale Pink (vibrant cool pink), Pink Fragile (pinky red), Vivace (fuschia), Fresco (cool mauvey

Stiletto (very shimmery, cool bronze - similar to Lancome’s platinum but much more pigment.)

Reds - Couture Red (pure red, neutral, vibrant), Red Glorioso (warm terracotta), Cinnamon (cool, toned
down red), Scarlatto (clear orange red), Marachino (clear cool red), Tawny (soft red - deep coral).

For face, Borghese has a new Milano MultiBronzer Spectra - a tri-colored blusher/bronzer with
shimmery copper, warm pink and deep tan. Also look for the new Perlattie Powders in small pots: Oro -
gold pink, Rosetta - neutral pink, and Luna - silver. They go on very soft and smooth. I mix mine with
my liquid base for a sheer, subtil shimmer.

Jumping on the dual pencil bandwagon, Borghese has released Wine Bohem/ Botticelli Charcoal and
Lucca Currant (deep brown)/ Brown Notte (medium neutral brown) duo eye pencils. Nudo/Brandy (pink
and rust), and Caffe/ Tobacco (tan and brown) are the new lip pencils.

ULTIMA II
Ultima II has been going through some transitions lately. It’s gone from high-end department stores
(years ago) to JC Penney, and finally to Walgreens, and Ulta3. Fans of this very reasonbly priced line are
just happy to find it. Counters are now set up in a "Self Serve" arrangement, making it easier to find
what you need, but harder to find a salesperson.
Spring colors for UII are shimmery and pastel as well - with a few new products. For those of you who
like the latest trends in stick blushes, lip glosses and pink shadows, UltimaII may offer a lower priced
alternative to its more expensive competition.

Beautiful Nutrient Nourishing Blush Stick

These blush sticks are very silky, but do not dry as powdery as Lancome Pommettes. These sticks stay
smooth on and should be set with powder.

Christian Dior

Always one of my favorite counters to visit, Dior never ceases to impress me. The new spring colors are
exceptional in pigment and texture. Lots of shimmer, but very subtil and smooth. Roses and lilacs
abound in lipsticks as well as eye shadows this season.

Bobbi Brown’s launching a lot of excitement this spring with a new fragrance, called Bobbi, and new
products - even a couple of non-neutral colors!
New Lip Shimmers - Champagne (cool cast), Malt, Raspberry (beautiful berry shade), Plum, and Garnet
(warm, reddish plum). Also look for her new retractable lip brush.
Three new Nail Washes and Nail Shimmers (to be layered) in Beige, Champagne, and Brown.

A new fair foundation stick is now available in Porcelain.
